“Vigne di Verre” project is led by a group of friends who began their journey together through shared experiences in social activism and community involvement, forming/creating/building a strong bond that has lasted over the years. Their passion and tenacity have defined this venture/mission, rooted in a deep commitment to the community and the promotion of the finest aspects of Sicily.
The origin of the term “Virrina,” the tool used in agriculture to pierce the soil for planting vine cuttings, is traced back/is linked to/has its root in to Cicero’s Orations against Gaius Licinius Verres, the Roman governor of Sicily from 73 to 71 B.C. The persistence/forcefulness of Cicero’s accusatory actions led to Verres’ exile, even before he could finish all his Orations. Since then, in Sicily, ‘si na virrina’ refers to someone who is excessively insistent, with a negative connotation that reverses the roles of accuser and accused. Making wine requires a remarkable ability to grasp the uncertain rhythms of agriculture and the variables of winemaking; to complete the winemaking process, a persistence like that of a Virrina is the key to success.
Two seemingly opposite figures appear, having a lot in common. One is tied to tradition and preserving roots, while the other has an explorer’s spirit, guided by a timeless sense of freedom. Vigne di Verre uses symbolism to express what it means to be Sicilian: the rock represents their roots but is also a starting point to explore the world. A journey brought to life by wine, which always calls/brings you back.
